This is a story of how crimes against children occur even in the UK. I bought this for my daughter as she loves these real-life stories, and started to read it myself. I was gripped by the story and learned a great deal about Forced Marriage. It’s the sort of thing that you imagine happens far away, and not in the next street. The characters were very real and I hope we can hear more about Vinny and her brat of a sister, Sofia, soon.
I felt even better knowing that all the profits go to charity.
Aneeta Prem has written a very readable and thought-provoking novel which is primarily aimed at teenagers. The book gives a real understanding and knowledgeable insight into the lives of modern families who are affected by domestic violence and forced marriage. It is beautifully written with characters and situations which are readily identifiable and has a story to which young people can easily relate. A “must-read” especially for teenagers who will discover an awareness of this often “hushed-up” subject.
This is an interesting and imaginative way to engage young people in the understanding of forced marriage. Agencies and staff who can help and support young people still feel great anxiety around this subject, often for fear of provoking cultural tension. Teacher’s are well placed to provide help and support to young people who may be facing a situation where they are being pressured or forced to agree to a marriage and I can see this book being a very useful tool for teacher’s to help young people understand the concept of consent.
